ARTIST BASED IN NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY
Maddie Johnson (she/her)(b. 2002, Summit, NJ) is an artist specializing in realism and textiles, drawing influence from her personal life and the reclamation of queer history. Through realistic mark-making and textile weaving, Johnson explores how people and space can become inextricable from one another in the forming of identity, physically carving space to represent the shared queer experience of belonging in the world around us.
Maddie is a BA candidate in Visual Arts studying at Fordham University, New York, NY double minoring in Psychology and Art History. She has made Dean’s List at the university every semester in her academic career and in Fall 2024 was awarded the Senior Capstone Grant in pursuit of completing her Senior Thesis Exhibitions in Winter 2024 and Spring 2025. Johnson aims to complete her Masters in Art History and Museum Studies for a career in museum education while continuing her personal practice.
Growing up in northern New Jersey with her family, Maddie finds inspiration in the ordinary, a theme she wishes to convey in her simple and thoughtful creations.
